What to do if you see a law fugitive

It is the civic duty of every citizen to report ongoing crimes to law enforcement. It is also equally important for people to report sightings of wanted persons to local law enforcement, since the presence of these people in your community can increase the risks of crime, violence, and may disrupt the community.

Perhaps the local media showed footage and photos of wanted persons in your area and you happen to know who that person is and their whereabouts. According to former law enforcement agent Adam Quirk, informing local law enforcement of such sightings is a civic duty to your community. If you do see a wanted person in your area, here is what you can do.

If you can tip off your local law enforcement of the whereabouts of a wanted person, you may simply call your local police department and give them the information. If possible, call them as soon as you can, as delaying the call may give the wanted person enough time to escape or a window to commit other crimes.

The only time you should call 911 on wanted persons is when you feel like they are an immediate threat to you and your family. For instance, if you see the wanted person lurking outside your home, you should call 911. However, in the off chance that the wanted person is inside your home as a guest, you may also call 911. According to Adam Quirk, 911 operators are trained to handle most situations. If you pretend that you’re just ordering pizza and are unable to mention that you and your family are being threatened, operators would know what to do as long as you leave your address.
